Fernando Manzo Obituary

Fernando I. Manzo | September 1, 1954 - February 21, 2026

Born on Wednesday, September 1st, 1954, in Santiago, Chile, Fernando was the youngest son of 12 siblings. He was raised in his beloved poblacion of Arauco. There he grew up listening to classic Chilean bands considered part of “La Nueva Ola”.  His passion for music naturally evolved into teaching himself guitar by ear, spending hours playing with friends from his neighborhood

At the age of 18, while playing guitar in a school gymnasium, he met the love of his life, Maria Isabel Espinoza. With his singing voice, calm, kind demeanor and quiet confidence, Fernando quickly won her heart and a first date. That moment marked the beginning of a beautiful love song and the greatest love story. Maria became his best friend, the mother of his children, and his devoted partner in life until his very last breath.

After 2 years of courtship they wed November 11th, 1976. Fernando would go on to work at a corner store style kiosk at the market, owned by his older sister. He approached every shift with a strong work ethic, showing up early, staying late when needed, and taking pride in serving each customer with care. He played futbol, practiced guitar, and was an eternal jokester, playing pranks on family and friends with the desire to always create a smile.

They persevered, made a life for themselves and welcomed their firstborn son Fernando in 1978. They continued to dream of a brighter future that would come to fruition when they received their US Residency in 1980. Fernando made a vow that in the United States they would flourish and that, together, they would do everything in their power to build a beautiful life side by side. On July 5th, 1980, they made their voyage along with their two year old son, Fernandito.

After arriving in SoHo, NYC, the young family eventually settled across the Hudson in the Marion Section of Jersey City, NJ where there greatest adventure began. Fernando was first and foremost a family man. He believed in God, the dignity of a man’s character, and an eternal passion for playing guitar. Fernando worked as a machinist, proud of being a blue-collar man who earned his living with his hands. In the summer of 1981, they welcomed a daughter. In the Summer of 94’ they welcomed their youngest son. His children were his joy, he took immense pride in ensuring they received a strong education, never missed a game, always made sure to give them a kiss and tell them how much he loved them, would cheer the loudest at his youngest’s concerts, cherished being a Tata/ Grandfather and treasured his beautiful wife with all his heart.

Always at the head of the table, enjoying dinner alongside his family. Winters were spent together decorating the apartment for Christmas, and NYE’s parties that never seemed to end, Spring was a time he spent cultivating the little garden alongside his wife, while Summers were spent outside surrounded by family and friends. He would laugh into the late hours cracking jokes and filling all those next to him with joy, with a guitar never too far from his reach.

He served as Choir Director of the Spanish Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel for many years. Fernando and Maria worked with the Latino youth group while at OLMC, putting on plays, offering their home as a safe space, and providing a warm meal for any youth that needed it.

In Fernando’s final years he lived peacefully alongside his wife and son in Country Village, spending his days choring, tending to the backyard, playing guitar with his youngest, dancing and laughing with his wife, going on late night walks with her, dominos and conversations with Ben, catching up with his eldest, joking with his middle & son in law, calling friends and family to catch up, celebrating Holidays, dressing up for Halloween, hosting backyard parties for family and friends, holding his Chabelita’s hand and always running a vacuum at the most inopportune time.

Fernando was a man of compassion, protecting his family as well as always lending his hand to anyone that ever needed it. A devout follower of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He’d play his oldies all day long, enjoy watching futbol matches on tv, and did it all by Maria’s side. Truly, his life revolved around Familia, Music, and God.

Fernando leaves behind his wife and soulmate of 53 years, Maria Espinoza de Manzo, his sons, Fernando R. Manzo, Giovanni Manzo, daughter Sussan Manzo, son-in-law, Lee Hopkins and grandchild, Victoria Manzo, daughter of Fernando R. He also leaves behind a loving circle of siblings, nieces, nephews, and life long friends. He is and will always be our Papito...the real American Dream.

--------------------------------------------------------------
